Our History

1964

Beginnings of the SAIMOC under the leadership of Monsignor Georges Coriaty.

Founder-President Mgr Georges Coriaty is assisted by a team of volunteer parishioners and Sister Aline Caron. The SAIMOC – Society for the Assistance of Middle Eastern Immigrants in Canada, promises to offer the following services:

  • Welcoming at the various entry points to the country
  • The provision of clothing suitable for the climate
  • Assistance in finding housing
  • Temporary housing
  • Administrative assistance for the translation and validation of diplomas
  • Job search
  • Support for the integration of children in schools
  • Financial support for families in need
  • The visit and assistance of elderly and sick individuals
  • A moral support service.

1972

SAIMOC AGA 1972

Let us note the respect for the internal regulations and the election formula in the annual general meetings that existed at that time.

1974

From 600 to 1700 families: a community center to unite the community

From 600 registered families in 1960, the number rose to 1,700 in 1972. The often-expressed need for a common place for cultural and social activities gave rise to the idea of the Bois-de-Boulogne Community and Cultural Center, the construction of which was completed in 1974 thanks to the contribution of Mr. Henri Salloum and his team of volunteers. The SAIMOC established its main office there.

1975

Civil War in Lebanon: aid to refugees and humanitarian support in Montreal

The Civil War breaks out in Lebanon. A catastrophe that will require, starting in 1976, the mobilization of all the resources of SAIMOC. The financial support from the federal and provincial governments was essential to cover the costs of the humanitarian operation undertaken in Montreal. In 1991, the great singer Majda El Roumi was invited to Place des Arts to give a recital organized by SAIMOC for the benefit of those displaced by the war. It was not until around 1995 that the flow of refugees from Lebanon stopped.

1978

15th Anniversary of the SAIMOC

1983

Between obstacles and transition: the SAIMOC in search of stability

In addition to the burden of its humanitarian mission, SAIMOC had to overcome serious obstacles starting in 1983. Despite government budget cuts, it was forced to expand its services beyond the Middle Eastern community in order to maintain its status. From then on, to be able to operate, SAIMOC had to rely on private donations. Mr. Georges Assal served as the chairman of the board for nearly twenty years. Mr. Fouad AbiSaleh succeeded him for five years. With the decline of the Lebanese immigration wave and the illness of Bishop Coriaty, there was very little action in 1996 and 1997.
